SUMMER AND FALL 2018

Registration for all classes will be held on Tuesday May, 8th from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at Prairie Roots Food Co-op at 1213 NP Ave Suite 100. For more information and class descriptions click links below.

NEW THIS YEAR

UNIVERSITY

SQUARE FOOT GARDENING UNIVERSITY

This is a great way to not only learn about gardening and practice gardening, but also an opportunity to get a supply of fresh vegetables for your kitchen. Use what you learn at SFGU at home in your own garden or you can rent individual plots through Square Foot Gardening For The Red River Valley. Spend time learning, working, and enjoying all of the aspects of gardening while working side by side with the only certified Square Foot Gardening Instructor in the region.

Cost of the program is $125 for the summer or $30 per session. Spouses and partners are encouraged to register for only an additional $10 per session or $30 per season. Plot rental is based on number of plots you chose to rent.

DIRT MAKES KIDS GROW TOO

KIDS

This is an opportunity for children from ages 5 to 18 to learn about gardening and experience what gardening is all about. There will be monthly session and each session will focus on a particular topic as it pertains to gardening. 

 

Cost for this program is $50 for the summer sessions and scholarships are available. Dates and times to be determined.

STRAW BALE GARDENING

STRAW

Straw bale gardening relies on the organic decomposition of the bale to provide the planting medium, the nutrients, and the bed for a garden that supports most garden variety of vegetables and flowers. Use what you learn at home, to start your own straw bale garden or rent individual plots through Square Foot Gardening For The Red River Valley.
 

This is an ongoing class that meets throughout the summer on a weekly basis. Everything you will need to start, prep, and grow a straw bale garden is included in this offer. You will be working side by side with an experienced gardener and will have the opportunity to learn about everything involved in the gardening process first hand. Plus, you get to keep the produce you grow.

Cost of the program is $125 for the summer or $30 per session and includes two plots. Each additional plot is $30. For more information click

SPin GARDENING

SPIN

SPIn stands for "Small Plot Intensive" This is a means of growing a lot of produce in a very small area. This method is great for those who would like to have fresh produce throughout the summer and enough left over to put aside.

 

Cost of the program is $125 for the summer, which includes a single plot, or $30 per session. Spouses and partners are encouraged to register for only an additional $10 per session or $30 per season. Limited plots are available,

BASICS OF SQUARE FOOT GARDENING

PRAIRIE ROOTS FOOD COOPERATIVE

Square Foot Gardening is based on the simple idea of planting in grids and not rows. THe Square Foot Gardening system that was created by Mel Bartholmew has been adapted by two full generations of enthusiastic gardeners who are looking for something very simple -- more yield in less space.

​

This class is being taught by Brian Fuder, Certified Square Foot Gardening Instructor and this presentation will focus on planning and setting up your garden to ensure the best results. We will discuss location, construction, planting medium, and planting ideas.

​

If you would like to participate, this class is being offered in conjunction with Moorhead Community Education and the cost is $19 ($14 for Moorhead School District residents.
